Naturally, in the days before purposebuilt circuits, our TT, like the other one on the opposite side of the world, had been conducted on public roads which were specially closed for the occasion. Even when new circuits were built in the 1950s, the TT generally stuck to its ethos, but it became harder and harder to find local authorities (especially the police) who would embrace the concept of motorcycles tearing around normal streets. Of course Mount Panorama was, and still is, a public road, but it had been built with motor racing in mind, and progressively adapted for the purpose over the years.
