This studio’s first title, Hyper Light Drifter, was a top-down pixel-art game that was all about responsive movement and tight combat. At a glance, Solar Ash is quite different, fully 3D with vivid colours and mysterious environments. But the philosophy is similar: here too it’s all about how you move, and satisfying character work helps immerse you in this world.
The colours pop, but the strange kingdom you explore is enigmatic. There’s a sense of mystery to the ruins, huge, looming fungi, whirling voids, and gigantic glowing crystals. The world’s not completely lonely, as odd characters hint at the true nature of the land.
The high-speed movement makes navigating fun, your character’s glowing neon shoes giving you a rollerblade-like rhythm…
