Stop-motion animation is going the way of the dodo thanks to the onslaught of cheap CG ’toons, so God bless Laika – the studio behind claymation charmers Coraline, ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls – for keeping the flame alive. Laika’s latest, Kubo And The Two Strings, isn’t just its best film to date, it’s 2016’s most enchanting animation.
Entrenched in Japanese folklore it’s the story of Kubo (Art Parkinson), a boy with magical abilities and a missing eye, who’s lived in hiding his entire life. The reason? If he ventures out after dark his vengeful grandfather, The Moon King, will take his other eye. After making a fateful mistake, Kubo embarks on a quest to find a legendary suit of armour, and picks up a pair of allies along the way…
