DR. JAMES STEWART’S vocation was teaching and writing math textbooks, but his love was music. Every home he lived in was the site of intimate musical events. His tremendous success in writing calculus textbooks gave him the resources to indulge in his passion of hosting even larger groups of musical fans to enjoy all types of music in a home environment. In the late 1990s, James Stewart first conceived the idea of creating a house whose design included both curves, and a large and flexible performing space. OFTEN, I get asked what the home of the future will look like, and whilst décor and design trends will continually change, what is certain is that our homes will become “smart’. HIGH IN THE SKY

THE VIEWS from here are stunning: The city on one side and Lake Ontario with the islands on the other side. It is 575 square metres of light, with modern interior design and art. The biggest space is the combined living, dining and television area with a direct view on the CN Tower. In the other corner of the apartment is the kitchen, with its own sitting area. M/Y LADY CANDY

M/Y LADY CANDY combines interior spaces worthy of a 56-metre vessel, with special performances that include: a maximum speed of nearly 17 knots, comfort which translates into stability, and almost zero vibrations and noise. The owner explicitly requested that the interiors were given priority over the exteriors, creating an enormous main saloon that covered 88 square metres of the main deck. He also had his and his daughter’s cabins moved to the upper deck to maximise privacy. The interiors had to be kept simple and welcoming. Briar root wood predominates, and is combined with soft colours like lilac and jade, reflecting an ‘international’ aesthetic that unites the East and West. A BIGGER SLAB

IT IS REMARKABLE that a comparatively small country like Italy should play such a major creative and commercial role in the world. And let’s not forget the extent of worldwide appreciation for Italian cuisine! The Salone del Mobile in Milan may be the barometer for the design world, but the Cersaie event in Bologna is the benchmark for the ceramics industry. It is the cheerful mix of creativity and advancing technology that facilitates the creativity. Also, it extends far beyond the imitation of natural stone. Today anything goes: ceramic tiles resembling rusted industrial iron, entire floors and walls composed of imitation ceramic, and ceramic slabs of dimensions and thicknesses that, until recently, were inconceivable. NATURE RULES in GO HOME BAY

IT WAS THE LOVE of a girl whose parents had a cottage at Go Home Bay that first took him there. The area forms part of the Georgian Bay Township, a large bay in Lake Huron, located within Ontario, Canada. It is a veritable Walhalla for Cottagers of all types. Rocky islands are topped with scraggly white pines, shaped by the west winds. The cottages in this region of Canada vary in size and shape from bay to bay. Those close to Lake Muskoka can assume vast dimensions, but at Go Home Bay, the traditional cottage atmosphere still prevails. The dwellings are usually holiday homes of simple design and construction, set inconspicuously among the trees. THE CONCRETE HOUSE

SITUATED IN BEDFORDVIEW, bordering a serene nature reserve, the altered house is perched on the steep face of the hillside, seemingly sliding down the hill. This nature informed the architectural concept and guiding principles behind the making of space and formation of the architecture: Rockface Extension. From a conceptual point of view, the architecture aims to act as an extension to the rocky hillside, with the occupants seemingly inhabiting a mountain face. This insertion/extension aims to deliver just that, as it is firmly rooted to the hillside through some impressive engineering, while also protruding out of the hillside as if it were shaped and morphed over time into its current condition. When it comes to categorising watches, we tend to organise them by the strict purposes their styles were originally meant for. That translates into a world of dive watches, pilot watches, racing watches, formal watches, business watches, etc... A category that only loosely exists in the traditional sense, but that is nevertheless extremely important, is ‘travel watches’. What is a travel watch? Well, traditionally, a pocket watch was the original travel watch because it was designed to be portable. More recently, the travel watch has become a more ambiguous category of watches that serve travellers with a range of needs, both functional and fashionable. LUXURY AND GRAPES

“THE WINERY, like all other factories, had to be designed to meet all the production necessities. Our aim was to provide a design preventing any disruption of the organic production processes. The building of the winery of approximately 16 000 square metres included production and storage sections as well as service areas, laboratories and offices.
