Because motorists are rolling in cash (allegedly): BMW has announced it will move to a subscription model for features other brands provide for free. The concept has not yet been confirmed for Australia or New Zealand but in other markets (USA, China, South Korea, Europe) the Bavarian brand proposes to make heated seats, heated steering wheels, an in-built dash-cam and more available by subscription through its ConnectedDrive online store. It now offers the ability to purchase heated front seats, a heated steering wheel or an in-built dash cam for limited periods. The features are also available on one-year and three-year plans, or to purchase for unlimited use. If not leased, the hardware sits in the vehicle unused. It seems the old saying is true: old Land Rovers never die. Add in a new saying "they just electrify". There is now a growing industry based mainly in the UK that will take an old Land Rover, eject its petrol or diesel engine and drop in an EV kit. But strewth, don't they cost the earth? Not necessarily. The latest is Electrogenic. For less than NZD$50,000 the UK-based company is offering a new 'drop-in' electric conversion kit for the original Land Rover (Defenders and pre-Defenders alike). Electrogenic's kit replaces the original diesel or petrol engine with an 89kW, 235Nm electric motor. Conversion costs are saved by bolting the motor onto the existing clutch bell housing, so the vehicle keeps all its gears, its low range capability and four-wheel drive.…

Back in the day, motoring media could hardly care less about utes and gnarly old 4WDs and such. Primitive, agricultural things driven by farmers and tradies was the consensus. How times change. In 2022, it's all about the race to mild, partial or full hybridisation and electrification. Going into the second half of the year, Japanese and Australian media are a-fizz with reports that the next Triton will include a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. Expected in 2023, the coming Triton will apparently launch the brand's first ever plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time, potentially beating Australian ute heavyweights like the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and the Nissan Navara to electrification in Australia. TESTED Vehicle sales statistics underline what a strange year 2022 has been so far. The traditional battle for sales supremacy between the Ranger and HiLux got shaken up, with Ford suffering through the final months of Ranger run-out and Toyota slowed by supply issues. There have been some unusual statistics as a result and since 1 April when the clean car subsidy (ute tax) arrived, some have been hailing the ascendancy of the EV as a result. After nearly three weeks touring the middle of the South Island, we arrived back in Picton four days before our sailing back to Wellington. After the last few days of main road traveling to get to Picton, we were looking forward to exploring the area, especially the backroads. We stretched our legs that evening with a stroll over to the Picton shopping centre to take in the Saturday evening buzz before returning to the campground for a quiet home-cooked dinner in the evening sun. I bet you are familiar with your backyard. Te Waipounamu is mine. Should you be heading this way here's some navigational tips: South Island weather tends to be more 'left and right' than it does up north and there's not a lot of middle as it's full of mountains! If it's sunny down one side it's probably wet on the other - those mountains aren't called the Great Divide for nothing! Many trippers from the north (which includes the rest of the world!) plan trips and book accommodation and events months in advance, all done and dusted for low stress. Patty pans, muffin, cupcake pans. Pickup a tray of six or twelve cups from granny's cupboard or a junk shop, carefully tap them out individually (use a soft hammer so they don't get dented). Use for holding and/or cleaning small parts and screws. Can also be used for same chores without removing from their original tray. I have little stacks of them in my working areas. If you're anything like me, you seek out opportunities to test yourself and explore the capabilities of your vehicle in every terrain possible. Getting through that mud hole, climbing that steep slippery hill or crossing the rather deeper than expected river and when the opportunity rises, driving snow covered tracks. China's Zhejiang Geely Holding (ZGH) Group has launched an EV-specific car brand in its home market, raising the possibility that New Zealand might see a full EV all wheel drive ute on local roads some time in the next few years. The company is one of the few that has no obvious links to the Chinese government nor to government funding. It says it plans to start selling the Radar RD6 ute in China before the end of 2022. Toyota's Australian rangetopping HiLux Rogue has received a widebody treatment for 2023, lining up a challenge to the Ford Ranger Raptor. It has shown a dual cab Rogue with a wider body on wider front and rear track (140mm) and an updated suspension package that includes a 20mm lift. The front end's bottom arms are longer, the shock absorbers are mounted at an adjusted angle and the front anti-roll roll bar is also a new, longer version. Adventure NZ During the four-month lockdown in Auckland I caught up on a lot of outstanding jobs around the farm and the workshop - including finally fixing the oil leak in the Series 1 that has plagued me since the engine was rebuilt just prior to our Carterton trip way back in 2019. Turned out not to be the crank seal, but a poorly installed copper seal on an oil gallery. It took four engine removals and four new crank seals to finally stumble on the root cause. It's been out in the Baja deserts, won in the high country of Nevada, and various versions have been built as privateer and factory-supported racers. A long time ago, about the time dinosaurs ruled the earth, off-road racing began. For ages, the islands of New Zealand were one mass. A mass of old tech, where the Morris van steering rack was prized and engines were meant to smoke and leak. When it stopped leaking it was time to top up the sump. The VW flat four was the weapon of choice and cars were referred to as buggies. Nobody thought it would be cool to get out there in a ute or SUV, in fact the term SUV hadn't even been thought up. Through years of photography I've collected a bunch of tripods. They are becoming somewhat redundant as people switch to cellphones. Clever they may be, but they still don't have the range of adjustments of a 'proper' digital camera. A tripod is an essential photographic tool for any form of serious imagery. Tripods are usually tal but there are uses for the pocket size ones too. A while back I saw a clever pocket tripod so made a copy of it.
