New York—Fox News host Sean Hannity interviews Donald Trump Jr. on July 11, three days after The New York Times reported on a meeting Trump Jr. had with a Russian lawyer linked to the Kremlin in June 2016, during the frenzied presidential campaign. Trump Jr. was drawn to the meeting by the offer of damaging information about Hillary Clinton. In the interview, Trump Jr. said that looking back on the meeting, he “probably would have done things a little differently.… This [was] pre-Russia fever,” he told Hannity. “I don’t think my sirens went [off] or my antennas went up at this time because it wasn’t the issue that it’s been made out to be.”…

Moscow—Anzor Gubashev and Zaur Dadayev, two of the five men convicted for their involvement in the assassination of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in 2015, sit inside the defendants’ cage during their sentencing hearing on July 13. The public shooting in Moscow of Nemtsov, a former first deputy prime minister, outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin and advocate for democratic reforms, was the most prominent political killing in Russia in recent years. The Nemtsov family’s lawyer has criticized the murder investigation for failing to catch those who ordered the killing.…

Hong Kong—Protesters mourn Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo outside the Chinese liaison office on July 13. China’s most prominent political prisoner died at the age of 61 of multiple organ failure while serving an 11-year prison sentence for incitement to subversion of state power. Despite international pressure, the Chinese government refused to let the activist seek treatment abroad for advanced-stage liver cancer. Beijing said criticism of China’s handling of the case was an “improper” intrusion into the country’s domestic affairs.…

Sanaa, Yemen—A boy rinses a bucket after collecting water from a well allegedly contaminated with cholera bacteria on July 12. In June, the U.N. health agency said Yemen was facing “the worst cholera outbreak in the world,” with more than 300,000 people having been infected in the past few months. In July, U.N. officials said plans to ship as many as 1 million doses of cholera vaccine to Yemen would likely be suspended over security concerns. Two years of conflict between government forces and separatist rebels has created a public health crisis and made it impossible for millions of people to get safe drinking water.…

IN MARCH 2004, Attorney General John Ashcroft fell ill with pancreatitis the week before he was supposed to renew a domestic surveillance program called Stellar Wind. He was taken to the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital, and James Comey, then his deputy, became acting attorney general. As the deadline to renew the program approached, Comey told the White House he wouldn’t approve it because he was concerned it was illegal. On March 10, the night before the renewal deadline, Comey was driving home when Ashcroft’s chief of staff called and said two aides of President George W. Bush were on their way to speak with Ashcroft. Comey raced to the hospital and “ran up the stairs with my security detail,” he later testified before the Senate Judiciary…
