I’ve just had a birthday. It was a most excellent day, thanks for asking! I won’t tell you my age, but just let’s say I’m at the tail end of the baby boomers and was born in 1962. Linda and I are off to visit our boys in London. I had decided no more long-haul travel – too tiring and aircraft cabins seem the worst place to pick up germs. I’ve been a ratepayer for nigh on 30 years. And I’m ashamed to say, during that time, I’ve thought very little about my rates, and where they went and how they were spent. I couldn’t even tell you who I voted for when I was living in the People’s Republic of Grey Lynn, which is not to say I didn’t vote. I always voted.
