I’m having to send regular messages assuring the beloved wife I’m not pining away or starving to death from self-neglect in her lengthy absence from home where, mostly, it’s been just me and the cat. Though there has been the occasional social outing. Being royal’s not all about gorgeous gowns and glamorous gatherings. Sometimes you need to pull on the boots and rain jacket to get the job done as Denmark’s Queen Mary showed when she turned up to a special engagement. The Australia-born royal went to a nature reserve to see work being carried out by World Wildlife Fund Denmark in south Zealand to re-introduce butterflies to an area where they’d just about died out. With Matariki upon us, celebrated broadcaster Miriama Kamo’s thoughts always turn to her beloved late father Raynol. “He was so funny and silly, and loved making people laugh,” remembers Miriama, 51. “If he could make you laugh, he was happy. What is Matariki? Each winter, as darkness lingers and the air turns crisp, a small cluster of stars appears low on the northeast horizon just before dawn. This is Matariki – known globally as the Pleiades – whose rising marks the Māori New Year: a time to honour those who have passed, reflect on the past seasons and prepare for the year ahead. The conversation our country has been having about Te Tiriti o Waitangi is making me think harder about my own whakapapa – about when and why different branches of my family came here, and what kind of people they were.
