Our family was flying home from Blenheim recently. Two flights – one quick hop across Cook Strait to Wellington, then on to Auckland. As I have mentioned previously, I have access to the Koru lounge, a mythical kingdom of free scones and kransky sausages. “Vape” is a slang term for electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes. They look – and smell – harmless enough. They’re bright, colourful little plastic devices with liquid in them, which turns to vapour as you breathe it in. They come in hundreds of flavours, from lemonade and watermelon to doughnut. They were originally created by a pharmacist to help long-term smokers cut the habit. According to the 2022/23 New Zealand Health Survey, 9.7 percent of New Zealanders aged 15 and over vape daily – an increase from previous years – and youth vaping is on the rise. The same survey found daily vaping among 15to 17-yearolds nearly doubled from 8.3 percent in 2021/22 to 15.4 percent in 2022/23. A midst all the dismal headlines and the bad news, sweetness emerges in unlikely places. My two-year-old grandson Benny, like other boys his age, is intrigued by machinery and mechanics. When I came to, after two and a half hours of surgery – does anything ever taste as good as that lemonade iceblock in the recovery room?! – I felt better than I had in years.
