After a life spent travelling the world, 82-yearold Iris Steensma was very happy to settle in the North Island town of Kerikeri. “When I was younger, a friend and I hitchhiked around New Zealand and discovered Kerikeri then,” she says. “It was a lot safer hitchhiking in those days.” Iris was born in Amsterdam, but came to New Zealand at the age of 10 when her mother split from her father. I’m just back from a cousin’s birthday in the alpine spa town of Hanmer Springs, northwest of Christchurch. While today it’s a modern, fun-filled holiday spot, its history is unique. The area around the hot springs became nationally recognised as a government spa resort after baths were built in the 1880s. A sanatorium was later opened next to the spa to accommodate visitors of “fragile health” who wished to “take in the waters”, but it was burned down.
