As I think I’ve mentioned, we live in a little cottage by the sea. To protect us from storms and increasing tidal surges, there’s a seawall between us and the beach. A group of neighbours, including us, have had that seawall strengthened. It was a big job. A prominent local contracting company did the work. Days prior to work beginning, we were notified by the diligent contractors that one of the local iwi had requested a karakia [prayer] be performed “to invoke spiritual guidance and protection prior to starting work on the site”. The call came out of the blue from my old friend Rob in his role at Tourism Fiji. Would I like to take the grandchildren to Fiji to help promote “skip gen travel”?
