At a garage sale in the ’80s, I was attracted to a couple of old books with stunning paintings inside of New Zealand birds. The author and artist was Mollie Miller Atkinson. I’d never heard of her, but I bought them. And for a few weeks, I thought maybe I was her only fan. I’m not. Mollie, born in 1909 and originally from Invercargill, was an exceptional silversmith, but developed tuberculosis – maybe from the materials she worked with. And later, living in York Bay near Wellington, she turned her artistic skills to painting and writing children’s literature. It made me think of my teaching days when writing a letter of thanks was mandatory – the moral of the story always being “thanks costs nothing but means a lot” and, of course, a valuable exercise in how to write a letter and why we need to have legible printing. There was a story in the news a couple of weeks ago looking at ageism in the workforce and “ways in which workers over the age of 55 can improve their employment chances in a tough economic climate”. I was worried most of all about Cleo when I heard she was coming to stay. She’s two years old and usually doesn’t much like the look of me, which is quite understandable from her point of view, I suppose, though it hurts a little.
