It seems extraordinary that many of us meet someone, fall in love and spend the rest of our life with that one person. What staggering luck. I often think about the “miracle” of finding that one life-partner. But is it a miracle? Is the concept of there being just one partner for each of us a load of poppycock? A great chat with the queen of talkback Matariki only became an official public holiday in New Zealand two years ago, but I think we’re getting the hang of it quite quickly. Every time I see pictures of the Interislander ferry Aratere run aground in Picton, I think about my grandmother’s coat. Edith bought the coat in the 1950s – black Astrakhan with a rabbit fur collar, as was the fashion of the time. It would have cost an arm and a leg, and doubtless involved some “going-without”. My grandmother was, by then, divorced and supporting herself in the workforce at a time when women mostly didn’t get divorced and become financially independent. Lady Louise Windsor had her own special cheerleader when she took part in a prestigious carriage driving event. Felix de Silva Clamp, a good friend from university, was there to support the King’s niece as she competed in the Sandringham Horse Driving Trials. Louise started participating in competitions three years ago but never on the royal family’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk until now.
