I was one of 20,000 people who turned out recently to “March for Nature” in Auckland, the front of the protest reaching the bottom of Queen Street before the tailenders had left Aotea Square. During the last school holidays, I took the grandchildren up to the Hokianga for a few days. Vanilla cupcakes PREP +COOK TIME 40 MINUTES MAKES 24 125g butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ cup (150g) caster sugar 3 eggs 2 cups (300g) self-raising flour ¼ cup (60ml) milk 1 Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan. Line 2 x 12-hole (⅓ cup/80ml) muffin pans with paper cases. 2 Beat ingredients in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on low speed until ingredients are combined. How remarkably generous women are, mainly with their time, and especially with each other. I’ve noticed this since my son’s partner Emma gave birth to her second child. Suddenly, her fridge and freezer is filled with baking and cooking. It might last for months. It’s the fruit of thoughtfulness from other women. Emma has a wonderfully generous spirit. Browsing online, I spotted a list of the world’s best cuisines, country by country. I searched in vain for New Zealand. Australia was placed at number 50 and the list didn’t go any lower. I imagine we might have been 51 and it could have been worse. There are 196 countries in the world and some of them love to eat awful things. In Iceland, for instance, they fancy fermented shark and in Cambodia, they snack on fried tarantulas.
