I grew up nervous around cutlery. That was my parents’ doing, mostly my father’s as I recall. She’s well-known for her unique and powerful music, and this week we celebrate cover star Dame Hinewehi Mohi’s induction into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. She has many achievements to her name, including her 1999 album Oceania and singing our national anthem at the Rugby World Cup in te reo Māori the same year. What some may not know, however, is that her daughter Hineraukatauri, who was born with cerebral palsy, inspired her to help found the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre 20 years ago. The funny thing about taking a toddler to the zoo is expectation. Adults go to see animals. I’m absolutely certain that some of my mother’s old friends still living in Hamilton fear for the poor woman’s life every night when they watch the television news. Mum lives just down the road from us in a retirement village, and although technically she’s in Glenfield and we’re in Beach Haven, every time her friends read of a murder, a kidnapping or a ram raid and see that it happened in Beach Haven, they must wonder if their old mate’s still alive. As she celebrates being inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame this week, Dame Hinewehi Mohi talks to the Weekly about the unexpected award and the healing impact a lifetime of music has had on her whānau. Don’t shy away from the garden as the cold bites. Winter is the perfect season for fruit tree planting! What you will plant will depend on your location.
