When Ingrid Hipkiss got the call to say she’d landed the role as co-host of RNZ’s flagship news and current affairs show Morning Report in January 2023, she had no idea just how significant an impact it would have on her, both personally and professionally. In a column I wrote for this magazine last year, which doesn’t appear to have attracted any complaints, I told you my testosterone story. But the funniest part of that story, I forgot to tell you. About 15 years ago, a benign tumour was discovered in my pituitary gland. The tumour was so large, its surgical removal left my pituitary gland pretty much useless. Among other lost functions, it no longer provided my body with testosterone. So for years I had to have artificial testosterone injections. At the time of that surgery, artificial testosterone injections weren’t subsidised. This made them too costly to afford.
