It’s a moment Kelly Adie will never forget. Her 17-year-old daughter Olivia had just undergone a major eight-hour surgery. If you haven’t gardened before but are keen to give it a go, herbs are a great place to start. They are incredibly easy to grow and packed with antioxidants and nutrients – plus you’ll always have fresh leaves on hand to add to your salads and cooking. Herbs are pretty resilient. Give them a decent patch of soil, some water and lots of sunshine, and they’ll stick around for quite some time. As we head towards another International Women’s Day on March 8, let’s do something a little different. The usual thing is to reflect on how far we have come and then assess what we still have left to achieve. Lists will be made of the ways in which our lives might be better than our mothers’ and grandmothers’, and spotlights will be thrown on the best of us who have found previously unimaginable success. Then to temper it, that second list of things we still need – to close the wage gap, provide access to affordable childcare, normalise a more equal distribution of domestic chores, and create safe workplaces, homes and streets. I bought a book last week printed over 140 years ago, in 1880. It’s called the History of the Parish and Burgh of Laurencekirk. Don’t go away! My story’s more interesting than that title suggests. The book is a history of the town in Scotland that my Milne forebears came from. It goes back at least six generations and there are frequent references to them in the book. A copy was passed down the family from my great-grandfather, William Milne. His aunty had sent him the book from Scotland in 1881. Unfortunately, years ago, the book lost its cover somehow.
