There is a family legend I like to tell whenever I get the chance. It shows what a sparkling human my big brother is and has been right from the start. There was a visit to Wellington when Stephen was maybe two years old – a pre-Christmas trip so my mother could do her shopping and visit her own mother who hadn’t yet moved north to our small town. Each year, a highlight is our Christmas issue. We find a special location, add festive decorations, dress up some celebrities and have some fun – Christmas songs included! This year was no different, but our styling certainly was. Alberton House, in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert, has a special celebration this month. The Victorian mansion, built in 1863, was bequeathed to the Historic Places Trust in 1972. The following year, the doors to the vast residence – which had been home to the wealthy Kerr Taylor family for the previous 100 years – were opened to the public for the first time. December 8 marks the 50th anniversary of Alberton’s public debut. In the past half-century, the stately manor house has welcomed thousands of curious day-trippers and played host to myriad weddings, birthday parties and funerals, in addition to providing a location for many magazine, television, film and music video shoots. 1 Preheat oven to 120°C/100°C fan. Draw a 28cm circle on a sheet of baking paper, grease paper, dust lightly with cornflour and place on a oven tray. Lightly grease and line a second tray with baking paper. 2 Place egg whites in bowl of a stand mixer. Using the whisk attachment, whisk egg whites on medium-high speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add caster sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until sugar dissolves between additions. Continue whisking on high speed for 3-4 minutes, scraping down the sides until sugar is completely dissolved. 3 Mix vinegar and cornflour together in a small bowl. Add to egg white mixture, whisking on high speed for 1 minute. 4 Sift over cocoa powder and, using a large metal spoon, gently swirl through…

Cardboard Christmas wreath You will need ● White cotton fabric or wide ribbon ● Scissors and/or electron cutting machine ● Medium weight cardstock (white/cream) or old Christmas cards ●Foam wreath base ● Hot glue gun and glue sticks 1 Cut white fabric into 5cm- 8cm wide strips (or use ribbon) and wrap around the foam base covering all surfaces. Use hot glue to secure. 2 From the cardstock, cut assorted leaf shapes, about 80 to 100 depending on the size of your wreath base. We used holly and pine frond leaf designs. 3 Fold holly leaves down the centre to add dimension. 4 Start gluing leaves onto ring base, ensuring all the leaves are pointing in the same general direction. Letters to the Editor RUGBY TIKI TOUR ● Winning letter I’ve just read Kerre Woodham’s article about her trip to the Rugby World Cup games in France (NZWW, November 13). I completely agree, as I was also lucky to be there for the first two matches and the last two games. My son and daughter-in-law told me two years ago that they had purchased tickets for three, and I was truly blessed. They bought a campervan in England and we toured Wales, Ireland, Scotland and London between games, heading back to Paris for the final. We found pubs to watch the games we didn’t have tickets for. Can you believe Christmas is practically upon us? It’s on the same date every year, yet I’m amazed on an annual basis at how quickly it arrives. I think, thanks to the fantastic chemist store that’s so much more than a chemist store, I’m pretty much sorted for my Christmas shopping.
