I’ve been reading Te Ara Encyclopedia’s history of smoking in New Zealand. I didn’t know that when tobacco first arrived here, most smokers used pipes – including Māori as portrayed by artists Goldie and Lindauer. European women tended not to smoke. Cigarettes were rare because they had to be rolled and cigars were for the rich. Later, middle-class men smoked pipes not just to relax, but as an expression of individuality. I think of those images of movie producers and playwrights who obviously insisted they be photographed with a pipe. What’s replaced that little vanity? Selfies?
