When was the last time you paid attention to your peepers? New Zealand women are skipping routine eye checks, which is placing them at a greater risk of developing otherwise treatable eye diseases, according to the latest research by Specsavers. Of a nationally representative sample of 1500 women surveyed in December, 89 percent admitted to having experienced an issue with their eyes, but nearly a quarter of those said they didn’t see an optometrist or a healthcare professional and instead waited for the issue to go away on its own. Who the first nine countries were (mostly the Scandinavians as per usual) is possibly less important than the news that Australia came in at number 11. Win! What interests me is that, while New Zealand ranked 10th globally in the World Happiness Report, we come in at around 30th for per capita income. Which suggests there’s some truth in the adage that “money doesn’t buy you happiness”. Something else is contributing to an overall sense of contentment – social support, a healthy life expectancy, a level of freedom to make life choices, and a culture that values generosity and fairness. Mayhem and mirth with the man about the house As a result of a close and uninvited encounter with a white-tailed spider, one of my grandkids had to be taken for a visit to A&E for a little medical attention. The bite was a bit sore apparently, but that’s not what really bothered him. What really upset him, his mother told me, was that he didn’t turn into Spider-Man. First of all, this novel isn’t strictly speaking a romcom. Yes, there is a love story and indeed it is often funny, but it is playing with the idea of romantic comedies, rather than trying to be one. A great chat with the queen of talk back On Mother’s Day last year, I was rehearsing for Dancing With the Stars before the live show on Sunday night. I barely saw my little mother, who’d travelled up from Hamilton to watch me and my dance partner Jared perform. It’s easy to forget the people on screen are human and that they, too, have real lives, aspirations and struggles. I liked the article because it wasn’t invasive.
