It was one of the most otherworldly things I have ever seen and I didn’t even have my mobile out to take photos.
It was pitch black and we were in Sabah, Malaysia, on a river near the village of Binsulok, with the boat’s engine turned off. We’d been asked to be quiet and turn our camera flashes off. “Your camera will work in low-light if you have a Samsung or a Huawei, but not an iPhone,” advised our tour guide.
Soon enough, fireflies darted around us in the darkness. On the river banks, they clustered together in the trees, looking like magical, natural fairy lights.
My family and I, and all the other passengers, gasped in amazement and wonder.
