My glorious sabbatical is coming to an end. I was thrilled when my employers offered me a new radio show, taking over from Leighton Smith, who had decided that this year would be his last as Newstalk ZB’s nine-to-noon host. THE CHILDREN ACT  RATING: M British beauty Dame Emma Thompson never fails to disappoint and her leading role in The Children Act is yet another success to add to her long list of films. The Oscar-winner plays Fiona Maye, a High Court judge forced to decide the fate of a sick boy who is refusing a life-saving treatment for religious reasons. At the same time, Fiona finds herself dealing with a crumbling marriage. It’s a captivating story and Emma is superb. The one small downside is that it does, in parts, seem too neat and by the book. My favourite book ever is… The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. I read it when I was a teenager and it was suspense on steroids. An early prototype for the detective novel, it’s full of tension and intrigue. It deals with the desperately unequal rights of sweet, guileless Laura Fairlie in her forced marriage to the scoundrel baronet Sir Percival Glyde. My book of the moment is… Stephen King’s On Writing, which gripped me from beginning to end. It’s part memoir and part random thoughts on writing. At best brilliantly thought-provoking; at worst, an engaging read. He is one of the great storytellers of our time, so his reflections are a worthwhile read.…

Recently, I used my gold card while venturing into the Wairarapa and discussion was robust among my fellow travellers, with one of the many topics being books.
