GOLDEN SYRUP DUMPLINGS I recently doubled this recipe to make it as a pudding for a family dinner. While there is no dashing backwards and forwards on Christmas Day for the royals, Prince William’s in-laws may be faced with a dilemma. Last Christmas Michael and Carole Middleton spent the day at William and Kate’s home, Anmer Hall, where they saw George and Charlotte for part of the day. Why we take Dietes Grandiflora (iris) for granted is anybody’s guess. We should be spanked. This hardy perennial with its spiky green foliage and spectacular white flowers is a gorgeous thing, and it’s really easy to grow. It‘ll do well in sun or part shade, can stand a frost or a moderate drought, and even does fine in coastal gardens. Water it well after planting and just occasionally if it’s a really dry summer, and feed it every couple of months.
