Harry and Meghan’s child will be seventh in line to the throne but, despite having a prince for a dad, Baby Sussex will not be a prince or a princess.
According to royal succession rules set in 1917 by Harry’s great-great-grandfather, George V, HRH titles are reserved for the monarch’s children and the children of the monarch’s sons, which is why William, Harry, Beatrice and Eugenie are princes and princesses.
(Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, turned down HRH titles for their children, Louise and James).
The Queen bent the rules for William’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, as their father is an heir to the throne.
