My go-to Gardenia radicans has pure white flowers about three centimetres across, with a gorgeous scent. (However, because it’s low-growing, I don’t often benefit from the fragrance.) It’ll grow in full sun – several of mine do, but it prefers light shade, protection from cold winds and frosts, and humus-rich, acidic, well-drained soil.
If you’re a real gardener, you might want to feed your gardenias every two weeks through spring, summer and autumn with a liquid plant food. If you’re a pretend gardener, like me, a slow-acting, general fertiliser once or twice a year when you’re throwing it at everything else will suffice.
