My eight-year-old daughter was rehearsing her line as the bad fairy in Sleeping Beauty. “And why didn’t anyone invite me?” she yelled, waving her wand. Aurora will prick her finger on a spindle and die!” Wanting to contribute, her three-year old sister added, through a mouth full of Weet-Bix, “Yeah, get a big ouchy.”

While I was sitting out in the sun one day with M in Memorial Park, Tauranga, a man happened to walk past wheeling an empty double pushchair. M had not seen the twins running ahead, but in a friendly mood called out, “Have you got them or are you just hopeful?” There was no answer.
