LOVE, SIMON RATING M  This moving tale follows the struggles of a gay teen as he tries to hide his sexuality from family and friends. While it’s refreshing to see a gay love story take centre stage in a mainstream movie and not only at an indie film festival, it could have dived deeper with more emotion. The book this film was based on brought me to tears and though the movie did pull at my heartstrings, I left the cinema with dry eyes. One of my favourite photos in the family collection is of my father sitting on a pebbled beach, resting on a piece of driftwood, fishing rod embedded amongst the stones. One of us boys, aged six or seven, is sitting between his legs, intently focused on a lesson in catching kai moana. It’s from the early days of colour photography and looks faded-fantastic. But since I started reading up about the history of gnomes, I’ve become intrigued by them – hence the story grew. But no, I’m still not getting one. You might, though. It’s been a whirlwind of engagements and parties here in London. It generally is a hectic social whirl when I come here, but this is the first time the bubbles have come out of a machine rather than into glasses. It’s probably a bit mean to talk about gnomes and conifers in the same breath, after all, there’s only so much kitsch one can take.
