Totally one of the strangest stories I’ve read lately and also one of the most gripping, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a puzzle box of a book. It’s part cosy mystery, part time-travel novel, with a hint of the supernatural and a lot owing to Groundhog Day. It’s all these things but also fabulously original. The story begins with a man called Sebastian Bell, who is lost in the woods. His memory has gone completely blank but he believes he has just witnessed the murder of a woman called Anna. Sebastian manages to stumble back to the creepy 1930s country manor house where it appears he is a guest. One minute the backyard was a magical storybook wonderland, the next, it was back to grimy inner-city reality.
