My favourite book ever is… Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper. It’s the fifth and final book in her The Dark is Rising series, which I first read when I was about 12 and am still re-reading decades later. It’s based on Arthurian legends and English folklore, but is a completely original take that is haunting, moving and absolutely compelling. My book of the moment is… Tom Scott’s memoir Drawn Out. Growing up, I gravitated towards funny writers. I particularly enjoyed those who educated me as well as made me laugh, and Tom Scott’s political columns in the Listener were an inspiration. Well, I spoke – or rather wrote – too soon about the glorious weather! Typical, though. I needed one good Saturday afternoon so I could host the women from work and what happens? It buckets down. Our work catch-ups are a relatively new initiative. Shortly after the reporters from The New Zealand Herald and Newstalk ZB began sharing an office space, a couple of women decided it would be a good idea for the female journos to get together on a regular basis. Chickens can stop laying when it gets too hot, so I get a bag of frozen corn from the supermarket and refreeze it in an ice-cream container of water. If you’re planning an autumn/winter vege garden, you may have to learn to love brassicas. Yep, that means broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbages and even turnips. Truly horrible, agreed, but also good for your health (yawn.) The trick is to find interesting ways to cook them and you may just be able to motivate yourself. If the vegetable police want us to eat brassicas, they need to change the name. I’m featuring this novel with mixed feelings because I found it darkly disturbing, as well as quite pretentious. However, in the current #metoo era, I reckon its subject matter is well worth mulling over or discussing and I admire the author for not shying away from tackling it. This isn’t a story to get completely lost in. Rather it’s designed to unsettle, provoke and challenge. Told in a choppy episodic style, things tend to happen in the gaps or aren’t fully explained. Even the punctuation seems to keep readers on their toes – there are no speech marks around the dialogue so you have to stay focused. It’s set on an island in British Columbia in the 1950s.
