I prefer page-turners but every now and then I’m drawn into a novel that meanders along slowly and takes me to unexpected places. That’s what reading A Thousand Paper Birds was like. When Kevin Dufty was offered a job as head make-up artist for The Brokenwood Mysteries, he jumped at the chance – for a very unusual reason. “It’s a make-up designer’s dream to be able to do four or five dead characters over a single season,”grins Kevin.
