Canadian-born Meagan Robertson has ridden some of the world’s most stunning mountain bike trails, including Squamish’s Crumpit Woods, home to roaming cougars and the occasional grizzly bear.
But it wasn’t until she arrived in New Zealand that she had her first “real-life” encounter with the most harmless of creatures – a hedgehog.
“New Zealand is pretty tame compared to Canada,” the 32-year-old laughs. “Here, at night, possums will sometimes run along the track for a bit, and there are a crazy number of spiders. Over there, every cracking stick could be something dangerous.”
A late-comer to the sport, Meagan’s love of mountain biking was prompted by a move from her home in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Squamish, a mountain biker’s mecca, in 2010.
