For more than 80 years, the Queen has shared her life with corgis – and, later, dorgis that initially resulted from romantic encounters between them and her sister Margaret’s dachshunds.
But last year, she announced she was too old to get any more, largely, insiders say, because she fears tripping over an excitable puppy. Now, with the death of 13-year-old Holly, the pack that was once 13-strong is down to one, Willow, and the Queen is said to be heartbroken.
Her parents bought the first royal corgi, Dookie, in 1933 and the Queen was given a corgi of her own, Susan, for her 18th birthday in 1944. Susan was the foundation of 14 generations of royal pets, starting with her own puppies Sugar and Honey in 1949.
