The Cut’s solo “Spring Fashion” print issue features Bad Bunny, Doechii, Rosé, conversation-provoking features, unique fashion and beauty coverage, and more.
THE COVER OF New York’s 18th “Reasons to Love New York” issue (December 5–18) featured a Pelle Cass image of 72 prominent locals—from artists to politicians to child influencers and more—all crossing a single intersection. On NY1, Pat Kiernan called it “the cover image that has everybody talking. It is a spectacular photograph that’s not quite what it appears to be, but it’s sure a lot of fun. It’s like playing a game of Where’s Waldo? with identifiable New Yorkers.” “I love the creative direction of this cover for so many reasons,” @BRETTAGNE_ wrote. “Every major city should have a ‘reasons to love’ publication.” The issue featured several dozen causes for affection. “I’ve never needed a reason,” designer Kenneth Cole said, “but if you do, here are 39.” The City…
INSIDE: The sleuths who exposed FTX / Last of the publishing giants / Fifteen years of “Sex Diaries” WHEN WNBA STAR Brittney Griner was arrested at a Russian airport in February for carrying hashish oil, as many as 30,000 people were in prison in America for simple marijuana possession. By the time she was released on December 8 as part of a prisoner swap that sent arms dealer Viktor Bout back to Russia, President Joe Biden had pardoned “thousands” who had been convicted of the same crime at the federal level. The exonerations were meant to correct our government’s “failed approach” to criminalizing cannabis, he said, but they also helped the Biden administration save face: Russia had invaded Ukraine a week after Griner’s arrest, cementing its status as a global…
THERE IS NO single cause of the fall of Sam Bankman-Fried, who was arrested in mid-December at his home in the Bahamas on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy. But it would be hard to overstate the importance of the revelatory work by CoinDesk, an outlet of hard-core financial reporters that was the first to publish indisputable proof SBF’s crypto empire was on shaky ground. On November 2, reporter Ian Allison broke the news that SBF’s formidable hedge fund, Alameda Research, was secretly propping up the crypto exchange FTX, the wellspring of his wealth and influence. “This story took about a month from the point where I was told off the record that the Alameda balance sheet was weaker than most people perceive,” Allison says. When he finally got a…
THE LIFE OF THE editor Bob Gottlieb, at a spry 91 years old, is nowadays largely limited to a single room on the second floor of his East 48th Street townhouse—by choice, not necessity. He can bound up Second Avenue just fine to the diner that he considers an extension of his home, where the waitress knows he takes his chocolate milkshakes extra thick. But everything he needs, his library and his pencils, is right here, so why go farther? To receive guests like this one, he didn’t even have to put on shoes or tame the gull’s-wing sweep of his silver hair. Burbling away in a leather club chair in his book-lined office (they are arranged according to a system, he says with a point to his head, that’s…
IN 2007, New York Magazine launched its “Sex Diaries” column, turning readers into a mass of eager voyeurs getting their jollies by peering into random New Yorkers’ bedrooms (or bathrooms, or kitchens, or public restrooms of choice) each week. Over the years, the column has done more than just entertain; it’s become an exhaustive, longitudinal catalogue of the ways people fuck in this city—a compilation of primary-source documents deserving of a place in the National Archives, in my opinion. On December 16, “Sex Diaries” became an HBO docuseries. In anticipation of its TV debut, I took a spin through the archives to see how sex has changed from the days when “Aqueous Transmission,” by Incubus, was considered a suitable fuck track and BlackBerrys—with their filthy little rollerballs—outnumbered iPhones. I read…
10. The Married Swinger at a Weeklong Sex Party in Jamaica (2022) 1 A.M. We catch up with the San Francisco couple, and the four of us make our way to the nude side. The hot tub is always packed at night. S pulls me into the grotto space behind the waterfall between the pool and the hot tub. F and A don’t follow, but A gives me the thumbs-up. 9. The Italian Wife Juggling Work and Sex (2015) 8 A.M. We haven’t had sex in a while, which for two Italians is like torture of the worst kind. But life gets in the way—my husband is having child-support issues with his ex-wife, and I am trying for a big promotion at work since I have my own kids with…
