Chef Nick Anderer intended his new restaurant, Anton’s, to be a tribute to the European-inspired foods of Old New York. Yet angel-hair francese, one of the menu’s “macaronis,” is an invented pasta based on an Italian-American meat preparation that can’t be found in the Old Country. Chicken francese—or “chicken French,” as it’s sometimes called—evolved from veal francese, a dish of lightly floured and egg-washed cutlets sautéed in a pan and drizzled with a lemony, buttery pan sauce. Richard Nixon inadvertently helped New York grow up. The magazine was founded in 1968, the year he was elected to the presidency. A few years later, coverage of the Watergate scandal launched New York into the business of covering national affairs regularly. In those years, he appeared on our cover ten times. ¶ In their new book Mag Men: Fifty Years of Making Magazines, Milton Glaser and Walter Bernard—who first collaborated in 1968 as New York’s founding design director and art director, and continue to do so today—recount their decades of editorial work, here and elsewhere. You must correctly answer 14 out of 20 questions (including two out of the four about road signs). According to several test instructors, the most commonly missed questions tend to pertain to alcohol—specifically, people not knowing that if you’re driving and over 21, your blood alcohol content legally has to be below .05 percent. Why is he called Diplo? Short for diplodocus, a long-necked sauropod, the stage name of Diplo nods to his interest in the dinosaurs as a child. Where did he come from? After growing up in Florida, Diplo threw parties in Philadelphia in the early aughts with DJ Lowbudget as Hooked on Hollertronix. Parties gave way to mixtapes, with one, 2003’s Never Scared, ranking ninth on that year’s New York Times top-albums-and-songs list. Does he have any actual albums?
