On March 1, 2004, shortly after New York Magazine was sold to its current owners, Adam Moss became its editor-in-chief. This March 31, he stepped down, having held the job longer than anyone else. IN 2005, an unusual painting appeared on the website of the New Orleans Auction Gallery, a small operation headquartered on the banks of the Mississippi River. TOM SLAUGHTER is out now from the Artist Book Foundation. IN 1981, JUST as Soho loft living became legal, Tom Slaughter moved to a building on Broadway near Prince Street. He was 26, and soon—mentored by the curator and critic Henry Geldzahler—he began to find his way in the art world. In 1961, Littlewood, a combative and twinkly-eyed British theater director, decided that working-class people were entitled to a theater—not the kind with a proscenium arch and red velvet curtains but a less formal, more anarchic kind. She teamed up with the architect Cedric Price to design Fun Palace, a great Erector Set contraption of trusses, catwalks, screens, ramps, and stairs intended for a grungy riverbank site in East London. Where once there was glassware lining the shelves next to the bar at Café Standard in the East Village, now there are magnificent loaves of bread: miche, rugbrød, rye, even Japanese shokupan. This is the work of Max Blachman-Gentile, the chef-baker of the café and its neighboring restaurant, Narcissa. Of all the varieties baked daily and sold from noon on, the most distinctive is the kasha porridge bread, inspired by—believe it or not—kasha varnishkes.
