HASN’T BEEN TOUCHED SINCE 1965 A Classic Sixties Spread in Gramercy Photographer Duane Michals’s floor-through is filled with friends’ artwork and junk-shop finds (and plants) from the past 53 years. THE FLOOR-THROUGH apartment that photographer Duane Michals has lived in since 1965 looks very much as it did when he and his partner, the late architect Fred Gorree, moved in—plants and all. “For as long as I’ve lived here, I’ve watered them every Friday,” he says. IN 1974, the painter Dorothea Rockburne was living in a walk-up on Chambers Street when she received an eviction notice from her landlord. Until that point, she’d been supporting herself and her daughter by waitressing and assisting Robert Rauschenberg, and she was forced to move just as she was offered her first solo show at MoMA. “So I started looking at these dreary, cramped apartments—then someone told me about this place,” she says. WHILE MANY SIT BACK and bemoan the decline of the diner, Sam Yoo is rolling up his sleeves and doing something about it. He’s opening one. It’s called Golden Diner, and he’s built it on the percolating fringes of Chinatown. And why not? WHEN NICK MORGENSTERN opened Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream on the Lower East Side four years ago, you’d’ve thought the former Daniel and Gramercy Tavern pastry whiz had done just about everything a man in a paper soda jerk hat could do to change one’s perception of the all-American ice-cream parlor. Although the place looked like something Norman Rockwell would paint, beyond the gleaming white surface lurked innovation. Morgen-stern made each of the 45 flavors from its own unique recipe.
