OUR NATIONAL POLITICAL environment might be paralyzed by partisanship, culture-war posturing, and erratic leadership, but our cities tend to be resilient, even when they’re flash points for national disasters, both natural and man-made. At least that’s the perspective of many mayors. One Saturday morning in early August, nine who were in New Orleans for the U.S. Conference of Mayors gave a couple hours of their time to discuss just why that’s the case—and why Washington might benefit from thinking more like them. “People don’t eat dessert all that much anymore,” says Empellón’s Alex Stupak. And when they do, they want … fruit plates. IT’S THE FINAL weeks of Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial America, the 18-karat-gold fully functioning toilet that has been installed in one of the bathrooms on the ramps of the Guggenheim Museum. Since 2016, it has seen long lines of curiosity-seekers waiting to glimpse the toilet; go inside; lock the door; and laugh, gawk, protest, or take endless selfies as a nearby guard watches to see that only one person enters at a time. I was put off by it and instantly bored with how banal it was in person. “WE DECLARED AN emergency on the opioid crisis in 2014, so we’ve been dealing with this for a while. We have a lot of ideas that could be helpful. For example, we want Ohio to establish an opioid czar and activate the state-of-emergency operations center. They did that when the swine flu was around and a couple people passed away. At most bars, nonalcoholic options run to fruity mocktails and ginger ale. At Honey’s in East Williamsburg (93 Scott Ave., at Randolph St.; 401-481-9205), there’s kvass, the ancient Russian beverage fermented from rye bread. While this Slavic staple might seem an odd thing to stumble across in the wilds of artisanal hipster Brooklyn, it’s not, when you consider that Honey’s is actually the tasting room of Enlightenment Wines, the adjacent meadery that has made a mission of injecting local terroir into lost-in-time elixirs. Kvass can be found elsewhere in New York, but not on tap like at Honey’s, and nowhere near as lively and refreshing. WHEN I WAS FIRST going to Long Island City, 20 years ago, people would ask, ‘Will you be back tonight?’ ” says Amanda Burden, who directed city planning under Mayor Bloomberg and is at least partly responsible for the startling changes there.
