SANTA FE, NM Emmi Whitehorse (Diné) grew up in Northern New Mexico tending sheep with her grandmother in a land she found magical and endless. Her grandmother wove some of the wool into colorful blankets and rugs. In high school, Whitehorse won an art contest and bought a set of paints with her prize money. In 2024, her large, abstracted landscapes were shown at the Venice Biennale. OFFICIAL MAGAZINE Holding the brush with an unwavering hand, he completed the final delicate stroke on the Sio Hemis—another katsina carving brimming with the essence of his Hopi culture. After days of meticulous work, believing he had captured the spirit symbolizing fertility and good harvest, the faint smile at the corner of his eyes slowly disappeared. The paint, so full of promise moments before, was in fact slightly uneven. Tayron “Tay” Polequaptewa, from the village of Shongopovi on Hopi’s Second Mesa, turned his attention to tying feathers. Corey Stein (TLINGIT) Life is full of funny situations, brilliant color and amazing artists that are important influences and subjects for Corey Stein’s work. “I enjoy using art to point out humorous contrasts, quirky juxtapositions and wordplay,” she shares. “Using traditional artforms, I explore contemporary issues to bring people into discussion.” Family issues with cancer, and Stein’s own recent experience with the disease, have inspired the Family Totem Cancer Series of collages. “The series symbolizes Tlingit members of my family who have had cancer, as well as recognizing my own cancer survival,” she says. OFFICIAL MAGAZINE As first days on the job go, Bill Faust had an all-timer. The year was 1981 and Faust was 21 years old. The job was at Lovena Ohl Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Faust was fresh in the desert from St. Louis. His boss was his great-aunt, Lovena Ohl (1908-1994). The gallery specialized in Native American jewelry, including the work of Charles Loloma. The legendary Hopi jeweler happened to be in that day visiting. While Ohl repeatedly refused gifts from Loloma, she couldn’t prevent him from giving something to Faust. From February 6 through March 7, 2027, the Heard Museum presents an exhibition that showcases the creative ways the iconic flour brand has been integrated into daily life, alongside an exploration of the history of frybread. On display will be roughly a dozen examples of clothing, bags, face masks and paintings that incorporate the Blue Bird brand in unique ways, from using the actual cloth of the flour bags to the company logo. Growing, locating, harvesting and prepping the materials are, in many cases, art processes unto themselves.
