Blending bold digital art, cut-and-sew apparel and powerful storytelling, OXDX challenges the erasure of Indigenous voices while celebrating Native identity and resistance. The name is an acronym for the word “overdose,” and urges reflection on consumption, responsibility and connection to land and culture. Since 2009, Yazzie and his team have used fashion to confront social issues, honor ancestral knowledge and amplify Indigenous visibility. On view now at the Heard Museum in Phoenix is a stunning selection of Native American basketry that highlights a key era of Southwest basketry from the early 1900s. The exhibition, Heart of the Community: Baskets from the Basha Family Collection of American Indian Art, draws from the collection of Eddie and Nadine Basha, whose art collection was recently donated to two Arizona museums: the Western material went to Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West and the Native American objects went to the Heard. Both museums are now presenting exhbitions, and preparing future exhibitions, that highlight the work from the family’s vast and important collection. The High Desert Museum, nestled in the picturesque landscape of Bend, Oregon, is dedicated to celebrating the vast High Desert region through art, cultures, science and history. Known for its immersive and thought provoking exhibitions and wildlife encounters, the museum invites visitors to explore the rich tapestry of species and cultures of the region. Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University Durham, NC In Power, Presence, and Future: American Indian Pop Art in Action, the Nasher Museum of Art will showcase the contemporary place and modernity of American Indians. An additional goal is to highlight “American Indian artists who are expanding upon and challenging what many collectors and the public expect and seek out as American Indian art, subjects and mediums of art,” says Dr. Courtney Lewis (Cherokee), faculty curator from Duke University. CHEROKEE, NC Now in its seventh year, the annual Kananesgi Fashion Show was created to elevate Southeastern Indigenous fashion and provide a platform for designers to showcase their work and connect with the wider art community. While the event is rooted in the mission to grow Indigenous art and design as a whole, focus is placed on Cherokee identity and innovation. SANTA FE, NM “Go big or go home” is the saying that is batted around playfully by the artists prior to Santa Fe Indian Market. In 2025, they meant it. Among the winners at this year’s market was an 8-foot bison bust made of paper, an 8-by-15-foot weaving so big you could (although shouldn’t) park a car on top of it with room to spare, and a 48-inch katsina carving that was so perilously carved and constructed that it seemed to defy gravity. Welcome to the 2025 edition of our Museum Guide. Native American Art features museum coverage in every issue, but our October/November issue allows us to let off the brakes and put in as much as possible. And trust me, there is a lot out there. More and more museums, even ones not dedicated to Indigenous art, are exploring Indigenous art, themes and artists. There are many reasons, but here’s a big one: every square inch of this continent once belonged to Indigenous people. Thus, every museum in North America occupies land that was first touched by Indigenous peoples. Currently on view at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, is a comprehensive survey of work by Santa Clara Pueblo potter Jody Folwell, who lives in Kha’p’o Owingeh, one of six Tewa-speaking villages in northern New Mexico. This stellar exhibition, titled O’ Powa O’ Meng, features more than 25 of Folwell’s works, spanning more than five decades, offering a robust overview of the artist’s career. TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART A number of recently acquired works will be featured during an exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art in Southern Arizona this fall. Cut and Paste: New Acquisitions Featuring Collage Works showcases a range of artworks in the TMA’s collection that utilize the collage method. A term with French origins, “collage,” means “to glue,” and involves the assembling of materials like cut paper, photographs, textiles, print media or found objects, which are then attached to a supporting surface. “Collage works can convey unlimited creativity, self-expression and communication,” the museum notes. Among the artists showcased in the exhibition is Chicago based artist Chris Pappan, of Osage, Kaw and Cheyenne River Sioux heritage. One of the remarkable aspects of basketry is the material that is used. By the time an artist is actually weaving sumac, black ash or sweetgrass into a basket form, that material is nearing the very end of its journey. Before that point, the artist had to go harvest the natural material—cut it, clip it, strip it…each basket is different—and then bring it back to their studio to prep it further, including splitting, soaking, hammering, cutting, dying and other methods of manipulation. The actual art part accounts for so little compared to the prep work. But that’s what makes this art form so fascinating: the patience, resilience and fortitude of the artists themselves as they meticulously gather their raw material. One of the great Western destinations in the country is not in Arizona, New Mexico or Utah, but rather a state or two to the east, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Singer Carrie Underwood sang it best: “I’d rather be tipping cows in Tulsa than hailing cabs here in New York.” Underwood—who was born in Muscogee and raised in Checotah, both near Tulsa to the southeast—was keying into the Western culture that runs deep in Tulsa and neighboring communities. Growing up on the coast of Massachusetts half-way between Boston and Plymouth, the first public sculptures I became familiar with were two of Cyrus Dallin’s sculptures of Native Americans—Massasoit, overlooking Plymouth Rock and the harbor, and Appeal to the Great Spirit at the entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. More than 11 feet tall and standing on a rock at the top of Cole’s Hill in Plymouth, Massasoit is awesome. Massasoit was his title, “Great Sachem,” but the English colonists thought it was his actual name. His Wampanoag name was Ousamequin, “Yellow Feather.” The sculpture was commissioned to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the pilgrims by the Improved Order of Red Men, a fraternal, social, insurance and political society whose membership was exclusively white males.…

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York is next in line to host the major traveling exhibition Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass, featuring some 120 glass art objects created by 29 Native American and First Nations artists as well as leading glass artist Dale Chihuly. While each artist in the exhibition shapes and manipulates the medium of glass, the range of artworks on display are truly eclectic.
