The designs of Adrian Standing Elk Pinnecoose (Navajo/Southern Ute) take the 21st-century phenomenon of 3D printing and turn it into an art form. During the last semester of his graduate degree program in architecture at the University of New Mexico, the artist explored the fundamentals of 3D printing, prototyping and design, utilizing digital applications to evolve his design skills. Obtaining his own 3D printer in 2017 lead to a variety of opportunities and achievements from SWAIA, the Heard Museum and the Autry Museum art markets. “My works relies on a strong vernacular language evolving from traditional Navajo textiles starting with my 2D graphics, fashion and now jewelry. Artistic Native American rings made after 1980 are small pieces of aesthetic genius. Their success is generally achieved by at least one predominant design element. The skillful, original manipulation of this visual element produces cutting-edge design. Rings benefit from their makers’ ability to conceptualize and highlight such unique features. The best innovative rings appear to follow established conventions while accentuating one unexpected, interesting visual characteristic. SALEM, MA The Peabody Essex Museum is showcasing a significant exhibition of 250 historical and contemporary works in a collection installation of their Native American and American art gallery, titled On This Ground: Being and Belonging in America. SANTA FE, NM Visitors go to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for many reasons, but one that generates considerable attention is all of the jewelry. It is everywhere. ST. LOUIS, MO The Saint Louis Art Museum was recently gifted seven Native American artworks created in the Woodlands region. To celebrate the gift and to expand its scope of Native American artwork displayed, the museum has mounted Woodlands: Native American Art from St. Louis Collections. On view will be more than 30 items that showcase the unique range of art being made and how artists responded to the changing ecologies and landscapes, much of which was linked to colonialism. Most of the artwork in the show is historic, with the earliest piece being from the late 18th century and the most recent a drawing from the late 20th century. SANTA FE, NM The whirlwind that is the summer season in Santa Fe, New Mexico, came to an end with a party hosted by Native American Art magazine and its parent company, International Artist Publishing, on September 24. Held at Nedra Matteucci Galleries, garden, the event saw a number of great artists, collectors and dealers in attendance. PAULA A. BAXTER Paula A. Baxter, a former curator and adjunct professor from New York, is an independent design historian living in Scottsdale, Arizona. Here at the Museum of Northern Arizona we’re currently working on a retrospective exhibition of Diné painter Baje Whitethorne’s work. Baje is a gifted painter and storyteller and an artistic treasure here in Flagstaff. His colorful work addresses the concepts of family, tradition and place. I’ve always loved Baje and his work, and it’s been a great honor for me to work with him on this project. What are you reading? Gold…such a simple, four-letter word that conveys the absolute best. And, of course, gold raises a necklace or a bracelet to a higher level, as it does with Native American jewelry. Talk to enough jewelry artists and you start to hear similar stories about the hoarding of stones and materials. Some of the artists will admit to careful and deliberate stockpiling of turquoise and coral—“These are for future projects,” they might say. Others are less methodical and more compulsive, and they do it because they just like knowing they’ll have stones around if they need them.
