The team at Native American Art is celebrating our third year of being the official magazine and guide of the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market. We welcome you to our coverage of the Guild’s 63rd annual event. The Heard Museum is known worldwide as one of the gold standards for Native American collections and exhibitions, and the Indian Fair & Market is just one of its highlights. Collectors will be able to access more than 325 artists through the virtual Indian Fair & Market. In addition, on the weekend of the fair, March 5 to 7, there will be live activities happening at the museum itself, including artists at the shop and the exhibition of juried competition works and award winners. All at once, hundreds of years of songs, prayers and tradition come together in every contemporary Navajo textile. All at once, an artist’s idea crystallizes. All at once, the artist’s years of training and practice combine to make the idea a reality. All at Once: The Gift of Navajo Weaving is the sum of many “all at once” moments. In this exhibition, we feature 45 Navajo textiles from a major gift to the Heard Museum by Mark and Julie Dalrymple. The Dalrymples, longtime members and supporters of the museum, focused their collecting on textiles woven in the first two decades of the 21st century. Taking on a hybrid format for 2021, the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market will continue its celebration of Native American arts and cultures with select live events at the museum while the exhibitors will all participate virtually. One of the hallmarks of the fair is the selection of the merchandise artist and featured artwork. This year, multidisciplinary artist Damian Jim (Diné)—who began as a demonstration artist at the fair in the mid-2000s and had his first booth in 2017—will have his figurative painting Corollary on the T-shirts as part of the promotion for the show. This classification includes personal attire and accessories, with or without a predominance of beads or quillwork. Also featured are dolls and figurative objects. Then there are functional objects, such as bows and arrows, cradleboards, boxes, weapons, shields, furniture, lamps, musical instruments, bullroarers, beaded bottles and other objects. Culturally based work will also be on view, both traditional and decorative, inspired by tradition. This includes bags, pipes, hide paintings, parfleche items, tabletas, masks and sandpaintings. In 2017, the Heard Museum received a three-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support a curatorial fellowship program centered on Navajo textiles. This grant was renewed in 2020, allowing the Heard Museum to continue and expand the fellowship for four more years. This year, the museum brought on two new Andrew W. Mellon fellows, César Bernal (Chicanx) and Roshii Montano (Diné), and the museum welcomed back Ninabah Winton (Diné) for her third year. The Mellon Fellows began the 2021-2022 fellowship term in October and dove immediately into work on the Heard’s original exhibition All at Once: The Gift of Navajo Weaving. Large works of art—20-foot sculptures or paintings—can amaze by their very size and scale. Small works in metal attract attention by the shimmer of the materials that compose them. On closer examination, the technical skill required to accomplish the complexity in these works deserves consideration, and the ingenuity used to create them can be equally compelling. The exhibition Small Wonders at the Heard Museum will include a range of small-format rings and brooches, some with designs and compositions that might be familiar and others that are unexpected. Included in the exhibition are jewelry pieces by Liz Wallace (Navajo/Washoe/Maidu), who has been incorporating plique à jour, one of the most difficult enameling techniques, into her jewelry for two decades. There is endless variety and intricacy in Indigenous jewelry. Beads, shells, copper, silver, ivory, amber and turquoise are present in jewelry of many tribes because these were major trade items long before first contact with Europeans. Metalwork techniques ranging from hammering and etching to silversmithing, overlay, inlay, tufa casting and channel work result in strikingly different finishes. Innovations in materials, design and fabrication techniques mean that it is not uncommon to find stainless steel jewelry or 14k gold inlaid with precious stones. The virtual market will feature 96 jewelers from 26 tribal affiliations offering one-of-a-kind jewelry from belts to bolos, bracelets to rings and everything in between for women and men. Pottery may be made from native clay or non-native materials, hand built, carved or figurative, fired out-of-doors or kiln fired and painted or unpainted. Handmade often starts with the laborious process of gathering, purifying and processing clay. It continues with a shaping technique like coiling without the use of a potter’s wheel. Many potters prepare the pastes and slips (pottery paints) using local clays and coloring agents (plants and minerals). The shapes, designs, decorations, colors and techniques vary not just from tribe to tribe, but from artist to artist as each person’s touch, style and mastery is different. Firing is typically done in open fires. Thirty potters from 14 tribal affiliations will be participating in the virtual market. The weaving and textile artists may offer regional, pan-reservation and revival style or contemporary style weavings as well as quilts, wall hangings and table linens. Look for beauty and craftsmanship. Does the piece speak to you? Do the patterns, colors and designs invoke emotions or tell a story? Besides feeling a connection to a weaving or textile, assess the craftsmanship that went into the piece. Do you prefer pieces made from hand-processed yarns and natural dyes? Are the edges straight, the corners square and does it lie flat? Think about the time that went into making the item. The Heard Museum Guild’s Student Art programs continue to meet the challenges of life in this new age. Watch for increased programming featuring virtual art-making workshops for educators and students, with opportunities to purchase new artwork. SCOTTSDALE, AZ Jennifer Tafoya learned to work with clay from her mother, Emily, and the art of sgraffito from her father Ray (1956-1994). Her great grandmother was Severa Tafoya (1890-1973), known for her traditional, deeply carved Santa Clara pots. Jennifer made small pots and polished clay balls when she was starting out. Today her traditionally coiled and fired pots and figures, etched with fine sgraffito and colored with natural ores and slips, are highly prized by collectors. Her exhibition of clay dinosaurs will be shown at King Galleries in Scottsdale, Arizona, beginning February 20. As a young girl, she was more interested in dinosaurs than dolls. TULSA, OK Cherokee Art Market pivoted in 2020 to host its milestone 15th event in a virtual format as a way to keep artists and patrons safe during the ongoing pandemic. Hopi katsina (plural katsinam, also known as kachina) dolls are figures traditionally carved from cottonwood root by Hopi men. Katsinam are messengers who accept Hopi gifts and prayers for health, fertility, and rain and carry them back to the gods. Katsinam can be male or female, and represent plants, animals, insects, demons, clan ancestors, human qualities, the creative force of the sun and even death. There is meaning in each aspect of the katsina doll, including the colors, types and arrangements of feathers, tools, weapons and other accessories. One important role is as rainmakers because Hopi farm in the high, arid desert of northeastern Arizona. The 11 Hopi carvers in the virtual market offer old style, revival and contemporary dolls. Many artists bring their children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews to the Heard Fair every year. Some of those children begin developing their artistic talents at a young age, as knowledge is passed from generation to generation. The Heard Guild invites youth artists, 17 years old and under to apply to sell their art in their relative’s booth (live or virtual). The Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market announces the first annual Indian Arts & Crafts Association (IACA) Commemorative Award. After 40-plus years, the IACA has been dissolved, and the Board of Directors gifted the Heard Museum Guild the balance of cash funds to provide an annual award of $1,500 for at least 10 years. The IACA’s mission was to promote, preserve and protect authentic American Indian art. In pursuing its mission, the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA) has had three main facets: defining, authenticating and educating consumers and others about American Indian art; Native identity and deciding what criteria defines who is an Indian and how it is determined; and cultural appropriation, including fraudulent American Indian art.
