WASHINGTON, D.C. The National Museum of the American Indian, a Smithsonian institution, opened the National Native American Veterans Memorial on November 11, located on the museum grounds. The memorial, designed by multimedia artist Harvey Pratt (Cheyenne/Arapaho), was commissioned by Congress to give “all Americans the opportunity to learn of the proud and courageous tradition of service of Native Americans in the Armed Forces of the United States.” NMAI director Kevin Gover comments, “Native Americans have always answered the call to serve, and this memorial is a fitting tribute to their patriotism and deep commitment to this country.”…

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK The beauty of color and design are on full display in the exhibition Through the Kaleidoscope at Exhibit C Native Gallery & Gifts in Oklahoma City. The artwork—from artists Marwin Begaye (Navajo), Michael Elizondo Jr. (Southern Cheyenne), Kristin Gentry (Choctaw), Gilmore Scott (Navajo) and Tony Tiger (Muscogee/Sac & Fox Tribe of Oklahoma/Seminole)—dives into patterns and traditional motifs but with contemporary approaches. There is a focus on two-dimensional pieces, such as paintings, drawings or prints, as well as artwork that may have mixed media components. TULSA, OK The year 2020 has brought many changes to some of the biggest Native American art events around the country, including the 15th annual Cherokee Art Market. The show was to be held in October at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but has shifted to a virtual platform from December 7 to 21, just in time for the gift-giving season. The show will happen on the Cherokee Art Market website and collectors from all around the world can explore the artwork. “I feel that the upside [to moving to a virtual platform] is that we’ll get a greater audience,” says Deborah Fritts, coordinator of Cherokee Art Market. “People who have heard of the show but haven’t been able to attend in person or maybe [those]…

TULSA, OK The eye is attracted to a Shan Goshorn basket because of its fine craftsmanship. Then the brain kicks in, recognizing that the splints are more than the structure of the vessel. They are drawn, painted, printed and written on to tell stories of racism and oppression. In an interview with filmmaker Sterlin Harjo (Seminole/Muscogee), Goshorn said, people were drawn to the “very unassuming shape” of a basket. “It’s a domestic container. It’s a vessel. People didn’t like the idea of being confronted with the possibility that they had been engaging or hanging onto racist or bigoted ideas.” Goshorn (Eastern Band Cherokee, 1957-2018) incorporated bits of history on the paper splints to create an historical context for her political commentaries. LOS ANGELES, CA BONHAMS August 31 Native American Art $1 million Bonhams held its Native American art sale on August 31, achieving a total of $1,079,650, with 87 percent sold by lot and 94 percent by value. Highlights in the sale include a fine Northwest Coast rattle (est. $40/60,000) carved from a single piece of wood that hammered at $47,575, a Haida or Tlingit Northwest Coast staff (est. $40/60,000) that achieved $60,075, and the top lot in the sale, an exceptional Tlingit rattle that bested its low estimate of $150,000 when it closed at $175,075. “The August 31 sale went very well,” says Ingmars Lindbergs, Bonhams’ director of Native American art. Sometimes it pays to have good neighbors. In the late 1960s, Boyd Tsosie, then a 13-year-old high school student in Many Farms, Arizona, lived four houses down from famous jeweler Kenneth Begay. “He was teaching in Chinle at the Navajo Community College at the time. I was a freshman who was also going to school in Chinle,” Tsosie remembers. “Every now and then I would see him outside, so I introduced myself and he told me to experiment on anything I could get my hands on. All I had at the time was a one of those butane handheld torches. But whatever Kenneth told me to do that’s what I would do.” With periodic, and impromptu, instruction from Begay, Tsosie got to work with any materials he could scrape together.…

PHOENIX, AZ The Heard Museum in of Phoenix is making history with the largest exhibition of contemporary art they’ve ever organized. The exhibition, titled Larger Than Memory: Contemporary Art from Indigenous North America, features more than 40 works by 24 artists from different nations and communities from the U.S. and Canada. “Diversity was a big part of what we wanted to accomplish as far as the communities these artists are from,” says Erin Joyce, fine art co-curator, alongside Diana Pardue, chief curator. “There’s also a lot of diversity with the artists’ age ranges and stages in their careers. NEW YORK, NY The Metropolitan Museum of Art has appointed Patricia Marroquin Norby (Purépecha) its first-ever associate curator of Native American art. Norby joined the staff in mid-September, as part of the American wing, where historical Native American art is now displayed, under the direction of Sylvia Yount, Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge. Norby previously served at the National Museum of the American Indian’s New York location, as well as at the D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies at the Newberry in Chicago. PHOENIX, AZ The Heard Museum’s poignant and powerful exhibition, Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories, has won the American Association for State and Local History’s 2020 Award of Excellence. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards Program is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. Away From Home, the updated installation of the long-running Boarding School exhibition at the Heard Museum, was developed under the leadership of Heard Museum curator Janet Cantley and explores the complex history surrounding United States government efforts during the 19th and 20th centuries to educate and “assimilate” American Indian youth through the controversial practice of removing children from their families and forcibly placing them in distant boarding schools.…

Precisely dating conchas by their “design” alone can be very difficult, since the design alone is not the only variable to be considered. The details of workmanship, combined with the design and how the design was created by the silversmith, must be considered together in order to try to date a piece even somewhat accurately. [The imagery of the general evolution of handwrought concha central design] illustrates some of the variables both in the evolution of the design and how the design might have been created. SANTA FE, NM Fresh off the success of its Virtual Indian Market, the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts has announced its popular Winter Market will take a virtual format this year as well.
