We aren’t quite sure the exact moment it happened, but it was at some special point at the Santa Fe Indian Market only two years ago when the spark that would grow to become this magazine was lit. We had been coming to Indian Market for years with our other titles, but two years ago we saw something take shape, saw the excitement and energies of the industry come together in one bright shining light, and we knew at that moment it was time to dedicate a magazine to the wonder and beauty that is Native art, the past and the present, the silence and the loquacity, the sound and the fury. (Ingalik-Athabascan) For the past decade, Glenda McKay has been exhibiting her traditional dolls, beadwork and hide pieces at the Santa Fe Indian Market. She’s been fortunate over the years to receive a number of accolades and prizes for her art, which reflects the rich heritage of the Alaskan Native cultures. McKay, who began skin sewing and beading at around age 5, learned from her youth how to survive off the land— snaring and food foraging in the wilderness long before it became Denali National Park. This has helped in collecting and designing the materials for her work, which includes beads, hides, and walrus or whale bones. “I do my own hunting and tanning. Women aren’t allowed to hunt the walrus or the whale, so I get that from cousins or…

When the 96th annual Santa Fe Indian Market officially kicks off, some of the more than 1,000 artists travel from home communities as far away as Maine and Washington state. Meet some of SWAIA’s out-of-towners! HEIDI BIGKNIFE – TULSA, OKLAHOMA Shawnee jeweler Heidi BigKnife can find inspiration anywhere. “I saw a box of tissues that had really cool shapes on them,” she says. “I knew these would become earrings.” After judiciously editing to make them her own, BigKnife went to work. She is known for her Genetic Memory series, which she says conveys the message of memory buried within DNA. “I knew how to do things that I didn’t have to be taught to do,” she says. “The hair [incorporated into the pins and earrings] carries our DNA.” The hair…

There are many books available that discuss the history and progression of Pueblo pottery. Some approach the artwork via the various Pueblos themselves while others look at the family trees of the great matriarchs who popularized the medium a century ago. However, according to art dealer Charles King and uber-collector Eric S. Dobkin, no book has ever focused entirely upon the artists themselves in their own words. “The book comes out of the way Eric collects pottery and that is through a personal connection with the artist,” says King. “The focus of this book from the beginning hasn’t been the Eric S. Dobkin collection of pottery but is rather about the artists he has collected over the years and, as such, the tenor of each artist takes over and drives…

SANTA FE, NM Film is often regarded as a single art form, but split it open even a little and dozens of other forms of art and expression start to spill out: acting, directing, screenwriting, editing, audio mixing and sound design, makeup, set design, costumes and many others. All of those arts come together once again for Indian Market’s annual Native Cinema Showcase, a six-day film festival that opens August 15 and leads directly into the market. This year’s showcase, the majority of which will be held at the New Mexico History Museum, will feature more than 50 films, all of them giving a voice to Native American filmmakers, characters or subjects. In the process of putting together this magazine, we’ve been talking about what brings people to the Santa Fe Indian Market in the first place. Actually, the question is what brings people back to Indian Market, year after year? Well, to us, the answer is simple—it’s the people. It’s the ability to meet the artists and talk with them face to face, person to person and to establish relationships and friendships with them that last over the years. And when people buy art at Indian Market—be it jewelry, pottery, painting, photography or beadwork—what they are really doing is taking an emblem of that relationship with them to have in their home to share with their families and other loved ones. The Youth classification is intended to encourage young artists to create without the active participation of adult family members. The class is divided into participants aged 9 and under, participants between 10 and 13, and participants between 14 and 17. Indian Market’s youngest artists are also eligible to apply for a youth fellowship, which exists to help aspiring artists thrive by helping them purchase supplies or pursue research projects that enhance their art. SANTA FE, NM Part of the mystery of studio glass is just imagining how the artist accomplished the dramatic forms, arrangements of color and the fine detail, and all without shattering the work into a million pieces. Tlingit glass sculptor Preston Singletary says those mysteries that viewers imagine are part of the fun of creating the works. “I’ve been working with glass for 35 years and it’s still an adventure. I hope that the pieces draw people in,” he says. “I believe that glass brings a new dimension to indigenous art. Glass is very fragile but very strong and durable. She remembers it fondly, mostly because she was nine months pregnant. “I was working in the restaurant business at the time and I was so nervous. With a gallery setting, the event has a different feel than the hustle and bustle of the booths on the street. O ne of the many beauties of Native American art is that so much of it can be worn and incorporated into your daily life. It’s interactive, as if it becomes a part of the wearer, an extension of their being. While jewelry is certainly some of the smallest work you’ll see at Indian Market, it is also some of the most treasured, from coral-lined bracelets to stamped silver concho belts to gorgeous pendants and bolos accented with veiny webs of turquoise. art is a transformative endeavor. An artist starts with something raw—wool from a sheep, turquoise from the earth, sumac from a dry riverbed—and turns it into something new and exciting. Many of the carvers embrace this process, particularly when they first admire a piece of wood, often a cottonwood root, and begin to wonder about its eventual form, color and purpose. The purpose of the Diverse Arts classification is to capture some of the oldest and truest traditional art forms that are not easily classified as sculpture or painting. This includes functional objects such as moccasins, drums, fans and dance regalia, and non-utilitarian, ethnographic art objects that were historically functional but have been altered to be displayed. There are four key elements that are important to every basket— materials, form, design and technique. On the traditional end, artists will harvest and clean their own plant fibers as well as use natural pigments. Working in a more contemporary style, basket makers might use commercial dyes and unconventional materials such as yarn, horsehair and thread. SANTA FE, NM Beginning August 12 and continuing through August 14, the Whitehawk Antique Indian & Ethnographic Art Show returns to Sante Fe, New Mexico, at the Santa Fe Convention Center. SANTA FE, NM Twenty years ago, Arizona-based Waddell Gallery began hosting showcases of fine Native American jewelry in Santa Fe, New Mexico, during Santa Fe Indian Market. Over the past 10 years these events have grown in magnitude and are held at the Inn and Spa at Loretto’s Zuni Ballroom. The gallery also has teamed up with Durango, Colorado-based Toh-Atin Gallery, which specializes in Navajo weavings. “It’s an interesting group of people [that attend] who love the art form,” says Waddell Gallery owner Gene Waddell. As an artist, I remember the days, weeks and months leading up to the greatest event of the year, the Santa Fe Indian Market. The dreariness of winter was filled with high hopes of genius projects that would stun the public. Those crisp days in the workshop, huddled next to the warmth of the wood stove, would eventually yield to sunny spring days and renewed fervor in preparation for the early fall. Long summer days and even longer nights began to fill with increased excitement as some projects found completion, others set aside with sadness to perhaps find the light of another market year, as projects fell into line, based on priorities and realistic projections for finishing them. (Zuni/Navajo) Both of Kandis Quam’s parents are carvers, and she grew up surrounded by the Native art scene. Her acrylic on canvas paintings give traditional Zuni symbols and imagery an abstract modern feel, something she does by incorporating motion and color into the work. “Certain colors make you feel certain things,” Quam says. “I play around with colors a lot, seeing what works and what doesn’t work. The ticketed gala, which is a fundraiser for SWAIA, takes place at the picturesque La Fonda Hotel. The sculpture classification recognizes skill in sculpture and three-dimensional objects. The classification encompasses representational sculpture, which uses realistic form to reflect traditional Native subject matter; abstract sculpture, in which forms observed in nature serve as a starting point for an end product that may not resemble their original source; and fetishes, which are small carvings made from various materials that serve a ceremonial purpose. SANTA FE, NM Ramona Sakiestewa always knew she would be an artist. “Having had a somewhat harried childhood I did art making as a way to create order out of uncertainty,” says Sakiestewa. The young Hopi girl probably didn’t imagine that one day she would be on the design team for the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., or that major architectural elements like ceremonial doors and screens would be her designs. As a weaver, she has been commissioned to realize tapestries for the painter Kenneth Noland, as well as 13 tapestries woven from the original drawings of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. But Zoë Urness, who participated in the market for the first time two years ago, believes that there is much more for people to take home. “We want to create something people can walk away with in their hearts, their minds and their spirits.
