Why do opossums play dead? This dramatic act might save the animal’s life. When under attack by a fox, bobcat, coyote, or other predator, an opossum will sometimes flop over on its side, stick out its tongue, and stare straight ahead. To add to the fakeout, the opossum emits a foul odor that smells like a rotting corpse. Even if the predator bites or paws at the opossum, it stays still—for up to six hours. “Playing possum” confuses the predator until it looks away. Then the opossum can jump back to life and run off. The trick is used mostly by young opossums, which are less able to protect themselves from attack. Adults tend to fight back: They bare their teeth, hiss, and screech. Somebody give this animal an acting…
HORSE POWER There’s no reining in Endo the blind horse. Guided by his owner, Endo became the fastest blind horse to weave between five poles, in just under seven seconds. The Appaloosa also holds the record for the highest free jump by a blind horse. Giddyap, Endo! YOU’RE MY BFF: BIG FUZZY FRIEND. I KNOW, RHINO! Rhino and Zebra BFFs Barberton, South Africa After enjoying bottles of milk, Daisy the rhino falls asleep with her leg across Modjadji the zebra’s face. These BFFs have sleepovers every night at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, where they’ve been growing up. Rangers found the baby zebra wandering alone at Kruger National Park during the rainy season. They named her Modjadji(mohd-JAHD-jee) after the local rain goddess. Just a few days later, park rangers came upon the orphaned day-old white rhinoceros. Although these species don’t closely interact in the wild, sanctuary staff put the youngsters in the same stall so they could comfort each other as their mothers would have. “They both require round-the-clock attention,” sanctuary founder Petronel Nieuwoudt says. “This…
Four zebra shark pups swish around in underwater pens near the islands of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Baby sharks Kathlyn, Charlie, Mali, and Audrey will be the first of 500 zebra sharks reintroduced into these waters over the next 10 years. Raja Ampat was once a healthy coral reef ecosystem with a large diversity of animals: Sea turtles, sharks, rays, and more swam in these waters. But destructive fishing methods(like fishing with dynamite and scraping the seafloor) hurt the habitat. And fishers often hunted sharks to sell their meat and fins for food. So in the mid-2000s, the local government created protected marine areas with rules for fishing and other activities. Even better: The government completely banned fishing for sharks and rays across a bigger area, and officials patrolled these waters…
