Now the birds are soaring above its southern coast once again. CHEQUERED SKIPPER Habitat loss caused this butterfly to die out in England almost 50 years ago. In 2018, conservationists released 42 adults from Belgium into an English forest. If these butterflies succeed, conservationists will know the forest is healthy, too. FOX PLAYS WITH TERRIER Corwen, Wales Rosie the orphan fox pup liked to outwit her adopted sister, Maddy the Patterland terrier. “Whenever I’d give them treats, Rosie somehow managed to sneak away with the dog’s biscuits,” says owner Richard Bowler, who took in the fox after she was abandoned. Rosie was introduced to Maddy slowly. “Maddy has always been playful, and it’s a natural instinct for a fox cub to play. So they got on great,” Bowler says. The duo’s favorite place to play indoors? The European rabbits were digging out a burrow when they kicked up two ancient artifacts: a 3,750-year-old pottery shard from a burial urn and a 9,000-year-old tool that might’ve been used to prepare food. The island’s wardens spied the goodies at the entrance of the burrow, then sent pictures to a local archaeologist. Turns out, the bunnies made a big find. “These are the first ancient tools found on this island,” archaeologist Toby Driver says. “So overnight, these rabbits changed our understanding to show that prehistoric people were visiting or living on this remote spot.” Rabbits dig burrows to protect themselves and their babies from predators and harsh weather. The last Eurasian lynx in the British Isles lived a life of danger as it dodged campfires, sprinted from vicious dogs, and hid in caves. Since around 500 A.D., people here chopped down forests to clear land for their pastures and farms, leaving these shy cats with few places to hide—and fewer prey to stalk. Once they began pouncing on sheep and goats, lynx became public enemy number one. Around 6,000 years ago, these islands were covered in forests full of wolves, brown bears, and lynx. But because of disappearing woodlands, lack of prey, and hunting, these large predators started to vanish from these isles about 1,500 years ago.
