Sea Turtles Work Out Boca Raton, Florida These baby sea turtles aren’t hitting the treadmill for exercise—they’re walking for science! In the wild, newly hatched sea turtles crawl from their beach nests to the flat, shiny horizon of the ocean. But bright lights from nearby cities can confuse the hatchlings, causing them to wander for hours. Biologists Karen Pankaew and Sarah Milton wanted to know if these long crawls tire the little reptiles. So they placed wild loggerhead and green sea turtle hatchlings on a tiny, custom-built treadmill. Then the scientists shone a light on the turtles to get them to crawl—though a few of the hatchlings refused. “One turtle turned away from the light and closed its eyes, like,‘I’m taking a nap!’” Pankaew says.
