It’s 5am on 7 October 2024, and Hurricane Milton is racing towards the west coast of Florida, USA. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled as it’s not safe to fly – but one aeroplane takes off. Its destination? Straight into the storm! At 3,000m, as it approaches the edge of the hurricane’s ‘eye’ (centre), fierce winds surrounding the eye (called the ‘eye wall’) violently rock the aircraft. Crew members are bumped out of their seats, hot coffee spills, and a slice of pizza flies across the aisle. The lightning is so intense, the pilots need a special glare shield to read their instruments. But this is just a regular part of the hurricane crew’s day…
