Nashville’s culinary scene has grown to astonishing heights. And when we look at the array of new restaurants we dined in over the past year, ranging from high-end omakase to fast-casual shawarma, astonished expresses how we feel. We’ve been wowed by ingredient-driven eateries: one offers authentic Mexican fare influenced by seasonal Tennessee produce, another dedicated to hyperlocal dining utilizing produce grown on site. We’ve been thrilled by the ever-widening scope of global dining experiences, delivering new tastes and perspectives: Lebanese, Japanese, Chinese, Peruvian, Laotian-American, Brooklyn-Italian. More than $1 million was raised at the 13th annual event, and proceeds from the weekend help to fund the fight against cancer through local organizations that provide innovative patient treatment, cancer research, and caregiver/patient support. “Sok Di Pi Mai” That’s Laotian for “Happy New Year,” celebrated with great joy in Laos from April 14-16. Those three days are filled with festivals, pageants, social dances, traditional music, ceremonies, and worship. It’s a time of cleansing and renewal to usher in the blessings of health and prosperity. Pi Mai Lao — Lao New Year — is observed by Laotian Americans in similar fashion, with Murfreesboro holding one of the largest festivals in the United States. The Nashville native put on a heartwarming and head-nodding show, reminiscing on days where singing on his own Broadway stage seemed impossible, and playing hits that changed his life.
