The Frist Art Museum is kicking off its 20th anniversary year with Picasso. Figures, an exhibition from the esteemed collection of the Musée national Picasso-Paris. From Feb. 5 through May 2, the exhibit will be displayed in Frist’s Ingram Gallery for its sole nationwide appearance; it will offer an in-depth look at Pablo Picasso’s career-long fascination with the human figure as a means of expressing a range of subjects and emotions. Within a month of Chief of Police John Drake’s new position as the head of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive on Second Avenue, destroying one of our city’s most vibrant thoroughfares. Drake’s officers were on the scene where they were miraculously able to roust sleeping residents and save every life before the bomb exploded. Nestled in trendy Germantown is Timothy Stammen’s studio—a building that, outwardly, might blend in with any other neighborhood storefront. But within those walls, creativity comes to life as Stammen pours hundreds of hours of meticulous work into pieces of jewelry that can only be described as works of art. Here, Stammen designs and creates unique high jewelry pieces, in addition to custom engagement rings, under his double-label brand Bezalel and House of Awr. For as long as he can remember, Stammen had two loves growing up: basketball and jewelry. “Whenever I got to build something with my hands rather than just drawing on paper that was something that I always enjoyed more. And when I first took that form in jewelry, I pretty much loved it immediately,” he says. An…

Locust, Trevor Moran’s little dumpling and shaved ice shop on 12 South, gives credence to the maxim “Less is More.” No matter that there’s four items on the menu; each has been meticulously crafted and imbued with a harmony of deep, balanced flavors and textures. An alum of NOMA in Copenhagen, and The Catbird Seat (second iteration), Moran conceived of this shop after a trip to Japan. He fell hard for kakigori, the fabulous shaved ice dessert, and places that served it. His original idea for a 6-seat shop grew, as he explored other simple Japanese delicacies he relished—noodles and dumplings. It set him on a quest to make them as perfectly as possible.
