At Gateway Elementary School in Madison, Gwenn Fitzpatrick has a disabled student who uses a wheelchair and does not have function in his hands. Last year, the school received a keyboard lab grant from the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and the student can now play music by pressing the keys using a baton he holds in his mouth. “He loves playing the keyboards,” Fitzpatrick wrote in a note to the foundation. “My [other] students love the lab, and I have noticed that many students that had a hard time in academic classes really excelled and especially enjoyed the lab experience.” Gateway is one of more than 40 Metro Nashville Public Schools that has received about $1.23 million for new musical instruments over the past 16 years. HARDING ACADEMY Harding Academy is a co-educational school serving pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. “I plan trips out of town around a city’s flea market,” admits Nashville native Brooke Hagaman, designer of the leather goods line Bone Feather. Nashville’s public schools have been under increased scrutiny in recent months as the school board prepares to select a new director of schools. Former Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools director of schools Dr. Jesse Register left his post this summer amid a mixed legacy of successes and failures, and while the school board offered the position to Dr. Mike Looney of Williamson County schools in July, he turned it down. At the moment, interim director Chris Henson is working hard while the school board works to find a permanent replacement. In the ’90s, Kevin Griffin was a king of the alt-rock scene, heading up the platinum-selling band Better Than Ezra. Today, he’s a bit of a renaissance music man: singer, songwriter, producer, artist manager, and fresh off a summer tour with his band that concluded at the riverfront amphitheater. The Nashville Ballet has raised the barre by expanding its facility in Sylvan Heights. The purchased adjacent building, previously home to Climb Nashville, increases the space from 31,000 square feet to 44,000 square feet. Three new studios, additional restrooms and locker rooms, increased lobby and office space, and a more defined traffic flow for student drop-off and parking are among the perks of the expansion. Increasing the space was made possible through the Elevate Capital Campaign, which began in June 2014. The Mother Church of Country Music unveiled a sleek new expansion to the tune of $14 million in June, and while Café Lula and the new 4-D “Soul of Nashville” theater experience—which highlights the iconic landmark’s 123-year history—are two of the renovation’s centerpieces, the Ryman’s backstage areas also received a major makeover.
