Dr. Carol Orsborn, founder of the new Conscious Aging Book Club, sees aging as a new life stage with value and meaning. “Aging is not just about growing older,” she says. “It’s about growing whole—making up the parts you missed earlier in life.” The book club, open to anyone and free of charge, reads and discusses titles aimed to break apart the stereotypes surrounding aging. “Let’s not romanticize aging. Let’s not deny it. Nashville woodworking company Maple Built was created by brothers Will and Schuyler Anderson. In 2012, the duo first opened Salemtown Board Co., a skateboard company that was founded on the principal of creating jobs for young men in Nashville. The influence of Salemtown quickly grew throughout the neighborhood it’s named for, as did the brothers’ desire to train and employ more at-risk youth beyond what a small skateboard company could allow. “My brother and I founded Maple Built as a nonprofit in order to bring on more young men and start taking on commercial woodworking jobs,” Will says. At Sinema Restaurant & Bar, he might go through eight or nine cases a week during prime peach season—and he’s always dreaming up new things to do with them, including tossing a few on the grill. Since 1963, the Swan Ball has been one of Nashville’s swankiest fundraisers, helping support the horticultural oasis, Cheekwood Estate and Gardens. Alice Whitson (right) and Amy Scruggs McElvey are among the longest-serving volunteers of Swan Ball (there are 200 others, as well), and they’ve served as evening coordinators for 21 years. Combined, their time volunteering comes out to four decades total, and they’ve done everything from cleaning up trash to getting programs printed and working with security. This year, with a theme inspired by the line, “A Story of Champagne and the Stars” from The Great Gatsby, and music by Boz Scaggs, Whitson and McElvey will grab their clipboards for one last time. Professional singer-songwriters bear the burden of deciding which of their many compositions to release and which to shelve. For writers like Brent Cobb, whose inexhaustible catalog stretches back 20-odd years, this undertaking is made easier by deep-seated musical roots, which help to shape the direction of each album. Last month, he released his third LP, Providence Canyon, on Elektra Records’ Low Country Sound imprint. Arriving a short two years after his Grammy-nominated major-label debut, Shine On Rainy Day, Canyon was written and recorded during one of the most hectic periods of Cobb’s life. “A lot of the songs were inspired by being out in the open for those huge shows with Chris [Stapleton] and Morgane last year,” Cobb says. “That makes you want to write something a little more energetic.…

Libby Callaway is a storyteller, but she doesn’t strum a guitar over on Broadway or craft clever hooks on Music Row. WESLEY ADAMS AND PATRICK DAVIDSON Owners, Bare Bones Butcher Cheeseburger, $10 “Because we are a whole-animal butcher shop, every week, we alternate where our beef comes from, getting one grass-fed cow and one grain-fed cow every other week. We then break those down and separate the fat from the sinew and lean beef. We grind a lot of things together—so, it’s not just brisket or chuck; it might be steak trim, ribeye, sirloin, flank, skirt. It all goes in to the same grind. And, since the grass-fed is a completely different product than the grain-fed, and it provides a different flavor depth, our ground beef has a bit of both. We take that grind, mold it into two patties, season it with salt, and they go in to a cast-iron…

We love it when a concept gets turned on its head and results in something unexpectedly better. Detroit-style pizza, which comes to Nashville via Brooklyn, served at Emmy Squared in the Gulch, is just such a concept. It begins with soft, yeasty dough pressed into a rectangular shape, in Sicilian grandma fashion. Then comes the cheese, shreds spilling over the edges that will morph into crispy frico as it bakes. Toppings, which run the gamut of pepperoni, banana peppers, sausage, Calabrian chiles, caramelized onions, and even the controversial pineapple, follow. Sauce is last and, at times, applied after the pie emerges hot and bubbly from the oven. And what a pie! The crust, while thicker than, say, Neapolitan, is not at all heavy. The edges have that compelling frico—fried cheese—crust.…
